There are four fundamental attitudes you need to wholeheartedly adopt before you should proceed thoroughly with the post-detox phase of your program.

Addiction Treatment programs are designed to help you establish the right mindset, but all in all, your journey is your own and establishing it is fundamentally down to you. Here are four things to bear in mind while you’re on the way to recovery.

Recovery is something you deserve

Many recovering addicts, especially those who have been caught in the addiction cycle for a long time, may have developed a number of negative self-image attitudes and as a result, can view themselves as worthless, casting themselves in the role of a failure.

This needs to be avoided – recognize your worth, and that recovery is something you deserve, not something you may be lucky to have a shot at. You owe yourself recovery.

If you convince yourself that you don’t deserve recovery, you’re less likely to make the effort to follow through. Believe that you do, and you’re much more likely to succeed.

Change is good

Addiction, like many others, is a habit-forming behavior.

Humans get attached to habits and routine because they naturally feel comfortable with the familiar, regardless of whether the familiar is positive or not.

Change is a necessary part of life, however, and static attachment to habit is what leads to addiction.

Accept that change is positive, and that it will improve your life. Regardless of whether you feel ready for change, you are.

You are responsible for your own recovery

You need to take the steering wheel of your own recovery and part of doing so involves examining your past behaviors and accepting your own responsibility in creating and perpetuating them.

Only you can change your situation, and accepting this will make you a more proactive person who’s much more likely to take the necessary steps towards successful recovery. Do not lay the blame at others’ doors.

It will get better

A big part of recovering successfully is imagining a positive future for yourself and those around you. Imagining is, in turn, a big part of actualizing possibilities.

A better life is not out of reach, but you must believe that you can make one for yourself in order to feel the motivation to continue.
